The temperature reading was accurate. It was also the least useful number on the page, and the forecast left you to infer the rest.
What you walked into was the dew point, the temperature at which air becomes saturated and can accept no more water vapor. It is the single reading that decides whether a summer evening breathes or closes in around you.
Dress for the dew point, not the air temperature. Below 60 degrees the evening still cools and dries after sunset; at 70 and above, sweat cannot evaporate and the night will barely cool at all.
Why Dew Point Decides A Summer Evening
Your body cools itself by evaporating sweat, and evaporation is a negotiation between your skin and whatever capacity the air has left to accept water. When the dew point climbs into the low 70s that capacity is nearly spent, and the cooling system you have relied on all day quietly stops paying out.
Relative humidity will not tell you this, because it is a ratio rather than a quantity. Ninety percent relative humidity at a 52-degree dew point is a cool, dry night in the mountains, while ninety percent at a 74-degree dew point is a Gulf Coast evening you will remember for a while.

Keep in mind that dew point is an absolute measurement, which is what makes it portable. A 68-degree dew point means the same thing in Charleston as it does in Cleveland, and your wardrobe can respond to it the same way in both places.

The band you land in sets the ceiling on how much clothing is viable, and every other decision happens underneath it. Note that a two-degree move in dew point does more to your evening than a five-degree move in temperature.
Sixty-five degrees is the working threshold. Below a 65-degree dew point most fabrics still breathe; above it, any garment touching your skin in more than a few places starts behaving like a wick.
Wind Is The Second Number, And Almost Nobody Reads It
Dew point tells you how much cooling capacity the air has left, and wind tells you whether any of it will actually reach you. Direction matters as much as speed anywhere near a coast or a large lake. Run the arithmetic on a real evening. At 84 degrees with a 76-degree dew point, the night bottoms out somewhere near 77 or 78, so the light jacket you carried for four hours was never going to earn its keep.
Invert those numbers and the advice inverts with them. At 84 degrees with a 48-degree dew point, the same night can shed thirty degrees after sunset, and the layer you left at home is the one you will want at eleven o'clock.
Radiational cooling decides how quickly you approach that floor. Clear skies and calm wind let the surface radiate heat efficiently, while cloud cover traps it, which is why a humid overcast night barely moves — a pattern worth reading alongside barometric pressure trends.
Overnight lows rarely drop below the day's dew point. With a dew point of 72, an 84-degree evening bottoms out near 74, which means the second layer you packed for later is usually dead weight.
Fabric: Weight, Weave, And What Fails Once Wet
Fiber choice genuinely matters above a 65-degree dew point, though it is not the first decision you should be making. What you are selecting for is fabric that holds itself off the skin and lets vapor pass through, rather than fabric that merely feels cool in a fitting room.
Materials that hold up in saturated, near-still air include but are not limited to:
- Linen, roughly 150 to 190 gsm. Its stiff bast fibers resist collapsing against the skin, and the irregular yarn opens channels that keep air moving even when the cloth is damp. Those wrinkles are the mechanism doing its job.
- Seersucker and dobby weaves. The puckering lifts most of the fabric off the body and cuts contact area by design, which is why seersucker outperforms a smoother cotton of identical weight.
- Open-weave cotton, poplin over oxford. Poplin's finer yarn breathes better in still air than a heavier oxford basketweave, and it dries considerably faster once you have sweated through it.
- Merino around 150 gsm. Counterintuitive in August, though fine merino moves vapor well and resists odor across a long evening, particularly worn under an open shirt.
- Technical knits with a stated wicking structure. These perform when air is moving; in dead-calm air they simply hold moisture against you and go sour by the second hour.
Two categories fail reliably. Viscose and rayon drape beautifully and then hold water like a sponge, and heavy smooth jersey — most cotton t-shirts above roughly 180 gsm — bonds to the skin the moment it dampens and stops exchanging air entirely.
All of these choices reduce to a single property, which is surface contact. Fabric that touches you in a few places is a garment, and fabric that touches you everywhere is a compress.
Cut Beats Fiber When The Air Is Still
Put a fitted linen shirt and a boxy cotton camp collar on the same 72-degree dew point evening, and the camp collar wins. Airflow through a garment is governed by its openings and its drape, and no fiber compensates for a cut that seals.
The openings that matter are the collar, the armhole, the cuff, and the hem. A spread or open camp collar vents the neck and upper chest, a generous armhole lets warm air chimney up and out, and a hem worn loose rather than tucked gives that air somewhere to go instead of pooling at your waist.
Trouser cut follows exactly the same logic. A pleated or straight leg in a 6 to 8 ounce cotton or tropical-weight wool keeps cloth off the thigh, while slim 12-ounce denim traps a humid layer against your legs and will not release it once you are walking.
Footwear deserves its own line. Unlined uppers, woven or perforated leather, and a thin merino no-show sock all outperform bare feet in leather loafers, because a sock that wicks moves sweat outward while bare skin simply pools it.

Reading Tonight's Forecast Line By Line
Before you decide anything, pull five numbers off the forecast instead of one. In descending order of how much each one changes the outfit:
- Dew point. The band you land in sets the ceiling on how much clothing is viable at all, and it is the number to find first.
- Wind speed and direction. Under 5 mph, treat the dew point as two or three degrees higher; an onshore direction suggests it will climb rather than fall through the evening.
- Cloud cover after sunset. Clear skies allow rapid radiational cooling toward the floor, while overcast holds the evening close to where it started.
- Sunset time. Solar load is the difference between a dark shirt being a mistake and being irrelevant, since color stops mattering thermally once the sun is down.
- Precipitation chance. A meaningful chance of an evening thunderstorm on a high dew point day is also a forecast for a sharp temperature drop and a wind shift.

This is the closed-room evening, common along the eastern seaboard and the Gulf in the final weeks of summer. One loose layer, an open collar, nothing tucked, and no jacket at any point — the low will sit near 75 and the air will not clear until a front arrives.

Bring a real mid-layer, because a 34-degree spread between temperature and dew point means the night can fall through the 50s before midnight, and dry air makes moving air feel colder than the number suggests.
